I’m running for IRVA, the national charity for road crash victims. IRVA is the national charity for road crash victims in Ireland. Set up in 2012 following the death of my son Darren in a road crash in Kilbeggan while he was on his way to college.
We provide free information, support & bereavement counselling to families affected by road crashes nationwide.
We help families to deal with the horrific aftermath of their loved ones death or serious injury, at a time when they are not only grieving the sudden and traumatic loss of their loved one, often their own child, but are also thrown into dealing with the criminal justice process which follows and which they know nothing about. The garda investigation, DPP and Coroner’s inquest.
In IRVA we are all volunteers and raise our own funding for the charity.
We try to ensure that families have the support they need and never feel isolated or alone in their grief. All of our services are free of charge, and we operate a 24 hour helpline which is open 7 days a week.
We are primarily a victim support charity but we also work with all stakeholders to reduce road dangers. We give road safety educational talks to transition students all around the country and speak to youngsters in the garda juvenile diversion/liaison programme.
We are constantly advocating for required legislative changes and improved victim support services.
We work both at home and abroad to try to save lives and prevent injury on the roads and to better support the unfortunate victims and their families.
