#CountyChampion- Mary - Dublin North
Hi, I'm Mary, from Limerick, living in Finglas, north Dublin, with a big interest in running and walking for both physical and mental health.
Covid 19 has brought so many changes to all of our lives, and indeed it is so much more important that we look after ourselves in many ways. Having the goal of the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon, albeit virtual again this year, helps us all to strive towards a goal, a personal achievement, and in the process raise much needed funds for the hundreds of charities who have been affected by the pandemic.
I retired early as a primary teacher last October. What a time to retire!! As a fairly active person, I struggled with the 5km travel restriction. We didn't see any friends or family from Christmas until we were allowed travel inter county. Getting out for a walk or a run really helped with my struggle. I took part in virtual events throughout the pandemic, as it gave me a focus for being active, as well as contributing to the charities my entry fees went to.
As a teacher, I believe the Daily Mile encouraged the young people in our school to be active daily. I'd encourage everyone to take in board getting out and taking a minimum of 20 mins activity daily.
I've participated in many, many mini marathons over the years. There's nothing that beats the feeling of participating with thousands of women on the streets of Dublin. Seeing the supporters out along the way, cheering their family and friends. Countless volunteers who give generously of their time. Reading the names of so very many charities on the myriad of tees in all colours.
I've ran for two charities so close to my heart. MS Ireland has helped our family over the years since hubby was diagnosed with MS in 1999. Our children benefitted as they moved from children to teenagers. I received support as a carer. And hubby got his support as a person with MS.
My second charity for whom I fundraiser is Special Olympics Ireland. I'm a basketball referee, and I've been involved since the World Games in Ireland in 2003. It's so true about being a volunteer getting so much from this experience. Indeed, I'm hoping to participate in SO TRI Peak Challenge on Sept 11th climbing 3 mountains on the day! With the virtual mini marathon a week later, I'll jog/walk or crawl if I have to to complete the fab women's event.
I always consider myself to be a 'slow' runner. I enjoy getting outside, to run or walk. It's so important to have enjoyment. I'd encourage everyone to discover what's on your doorstep. Indeed, when county was permitted earlier this year, I discovered so much in the county of Dublin...I walked places like Cruagh Woods, the Poolbeg lighthouse, Bohernabreena Reservoir. My all time favourite place to run or walk is Howth, especially at sunrise and sunset, when there's a beauty about this coastal village. I very much feel the power of me, at one with nature. Everyone of us can feel this positivity and power if open to it.
I'm presently in the middle of a 32 county challenge!! I'm like a dog let off the leash since we could travel around the country!! 20 counties ran/walked a minimum of 5km in each since June 1st. Hoping to have explored all 32 by the end of August. Enjoy what's on your doorstep, in your own county. I'm discovering fab forests, trails, coastal routes never before visited. Retirement is great! But the best bit is hubby comes with me. He is not letting his MS get in the way of travelling with me and enjoying a coffee and cake before we head home. Willie has always been my no 1 supporter, and when actual events were taking place(seems a different world to the virtual) he'd be waiting for me at the finish line, cheering me and all the other participants over the line.
Whether this is your first or thirty first mini marathon, enjoy that feeling of completing 10k. There's nothing better. Whether you're walking or running solo or with friends, in however long it takes you, know you've undertaken the steps not just for your chosen charities, but for YOU. You are powerful. You are amazing. Celebrate your achievement. And keep up the activity levels...for YOU.
