Charity Spotlight: Purple House Cancer Support
We are here for you.
We’d like to know about your charity. Tell us who you are?
Purple House is a home for home for families living with cancer. Whether a person is in treatment, finished treatment, or supporting a loved one coping with a cancer diagnosis. Purple House is here to provide emotional support, practical assistance, and complementary therapies. And all are welcome.
Why was this charity set up?
Purple House Cancer Support was founded by Veronica and Brendan O'Leary in 1990 following their own experience of living with cancer. However, the O’Leary’s experience was very different to the experience anyone who visits Purple House will have. At this time there were no supports available for families in the community.
There was nobody and nowhere to turn to. So, they changed that.
And founded the first Community based Cancer Support Centre in Ireland – Purple House.
What does your charity do?
Purple House provides support for families living with cancer in a warm, comfortable setting, a far cry from the clinical hospital settings experienced by cancer patients.
We provide a number of services on a 1-2-1 basis such as counselling, play therapy with children and group and peer to peer supports and classes. Our programs aim to support overall physical and mental wellbeing, empowering individuals to take an active role in their healing journey.
What does the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon mean for your charity?
Purple House relies on fundraising events and donations to provide our wide range of essential services to families who need us. We receive limited government funding and many of our supports receive no funding at all.
A family once said ‘The services our children received have made a nightmare situation livable, and have helped us smile again. Without charities like Purple House families would go through this darkness without the glimmer of rainbows that Purple House gives.'
Events like the Vhi women’s mini marathon mean that we can continue to give families their smiles back and continue to be their rainbow in stormy weather.
