Charity Spotlight: SOSAD Ireland
Supporting You and Your Menal Health
We’d like to know about your charity. Tell us who you are?
Suicide prevention through early intervention. Since 2007, SOSAD (Save Our Sons And Daughters) has worked to raise awareness and help prevent suicide in Ireland. We have worked tirelessly in our communities to help those in need feel supported and know they are not alone on their journey.
We have 6 offices where we provide free professional counselling sessions - Drogheda, Dundalk, Navan, Cavan, Monaghan and Laois. We provide remote counselling via phone or online. We also run a 24 hour helpline (1800 901 909) and a messaging service on our website www.sosadireland.ie.
SOSAD offer support and services for people who are struggling with suicidal ideation, self-harming, depression, bereavement, stress and anxiety, or if you simply need to talk. Through collaborative relationships with professionals and other organisations, we have discovered the need to prevent suicidal ideation by intervening early and equipping people with the tools necessary to increase their resilience and navigate life's obstacles while protecting their mental health.
Why was this charity set up?
Following the death of our founder's son by suicide in 2003, SOSAD was set up to support people who are experiencing suicidal ideation. Essentially, SOSAD was set up to "Save Our Sons And Daughters"
What does your charity do?
We provide free professional counselling to anyone over the age of 18 who needs it. We also operate a free 24 hour helpline to provide support to people around the clock. We run free DBT groups and also provide bereavement support. We speak in schools and workplaces in the hopes of educating people on the importance of taking care of their mental health and also to raise awareness on the support available to people experiencing suicidal thoughts.
What does the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon mean for your charity?
The potential awareness that the VHI Women's Mini Marathon could bring for SOSAD and the services that we provide means the world to us along with potential donations and fundraising to help keep our doors open.
As we are not currently state funded, we rely solely on donations to continue to provide life saving intervention to people experiencing suicidal ideation and their families.
